Loyola Goes Cold Late, Falls To Milwaukee, 60-51

Feb. 18, 2010

Box Score

Milwaukee, Wis. - Loyola's offense went cold down the stretch, managing just one field goal over the final 4:26, as Milwaukee was able to grab a 60-51 win over the Ramblers this evening at U.S. Cellular Arena in Milwaukee, Wis. Loyola falls to 13-12 (7-7 Horizon) with the loss while the Panthers move to 10-14 (5-8) with the win.

The Ramblers struggled to get in a rhythm all night long and they found themselves down 11-2 after the opening five minutes. The deficit grew to double figures (17-6) on a Sammy Theut basket midway through the period before LU battled back. Seven quick points from Ellen Ayoub made it a six-point game and Elyse VanBogaert capped a 16-5 run later with a basket to tie it at 24 with 2:54 left. Both teams struggled the rest of the way as a Lindsay Laur free throw was the only point from that point on as UWM took a 25-24 lead into halftime.

The second half was tight the whole way, as Loyola struggled to get over the hump. Two Shannon Finnegan baskets pulled LU even again (32-32) but UWM was able to consistently get to the free throw line, eventually opening a 37-32 lead on a pair of Jodie McClain free throws. A Maggie McCloskey three-pointer later pulled the Ramblers even at 45 and, after two Danielle Jorgenson charity tosses put the Panthers back in front, Keisha Collins buried a pull-up jumper to tie the game again at 47 with 4:26 left. However, the Rambler offense would struggle the rest of the way, managing just four points down the stretch, all in the final minute, as Milwaukee put the game away.

Loyola tried to exploit its size advantage inside but shot just 36% for the game. The misses helped Milwaukee to a 42-32 edge on the boards and the Panthers made a living at the free throw line, converting 22-of-32 from the stripe while the Ramblers made good on 3-of-4.

Finnegan led the way with 12 points with Collins (11 points, eight assists) and Ayoub (10 points, six rebounds) also reaching double figures. Laur led Milwaukee with 18 points.

Loyola wraps up its Wisconsin trip with a Saturday afternoon game (2 p.m.) at Green Bay.
