BOCA RATON, Fla. - Jenna Grim went 3-for-3 and belted a grand slam, while Amy Solava allowed only two hits and struck out five, to lead Loyola University Chicago (1-0) to an 8-0 victory in five innings over Providence (0-5) this afternoon at the FAU Milken Invitational hosted by Florida Atlantic University.
The game was a pitcher's duel through three and a half innings before the Ramblers' offense got heated up and hung seven runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Ellen Kresl reached base on an error to lead off the inning and back-to-back infield singles by Stephanie Cihlar and Lauren Arceneaux loaded the bases for Grim. The junior catcher, who led the team with nine home runs a year ago, picked up where she left off, blasting a Corinne Clauss offering over the fence in left center for a grand slam and a 4-0 Loyola lead.
Jacqueline Grim added to the lead with a run-scoring infield hit and Angie Funston's two-run triple stretched the Rambler lead to a comfortable 7-0. Kristen Medrud's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth scored Arceneaux to end the game.
Solava was economical in the circle, allowing only two hits and a pair of walks, while striking out five Friars in the complete-game win. The right hander now owns 43 career victories and is eight shy of equaling Karie Klier's record of 51.
In addition to the RBI production from Jenna Grim (3-for-3, 4 RBI) and Funston (1-for-2, 2 RBI), Medrud went 2-for-3 to lead the Loyola offensive charge.
