Sept. 18, 2010

Box Score

DES MOINES- Will Martin netted his first goal of the season, and Andy Weis brought the visitors back late in the game, but the Drake Bulldogs used home-field to its advantage on Saturday evening with two first-half goals and another in the final frame, leading to a 3-2 win over Loyola University Chicago in Des Moines, Iowa.

Despite a strong effort, Loyola moves to 0-5-1 in the 2010 campaign. Drake improves to .500 at 3-3 this season.

The Bulldogs hit the board twice in the game's opening 15 minutes, picking up goals from Charles Schwartz and Thomas Ostrander.

Down a pair, Loyola fought back, receiving a goal from its leader on the backline. Martin made the contest 2-1 after floating a 35-yard shot into the back of the Drake net. The goal was unassisted.

The teams went into halftime with Drake holding a one-score lead.

In the 62nd minutes, the Bulldogs increased its lead to 3-1, when Schwartz fired a corner kick to a charging Garrett Crall, who headed the ball past Loyola goalkeeper Peter McKeown.

For the second time in the game, the Ramblers didn't bow down, finding ways to push the ball deep into Drake's defense.

In the 81st minute, Weis received a pass from James Howe, then fired a 25-foot shot past Bulldog goalkeeper Jordan Kadlec, pulling Loyola within a goal, 3-2.

Unfortunately for the visitors, Drake broke up Loyola's final opportunities, while nearly increasing the lead to 4-2. However, neither team hit the scoreboard as the time ticked away for the end of the contest, with Drake winning 3-2.

Loyola was led on offense by Martin and Weis, as both Ramblers picked up a goal, an assist on a shot attempt. Chris Mills fired four shots, two on goal.

The men's soccer team will return to the Loyola Soccer Park and open up the Horizon League schedule against Detroit on September 24. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. CST.
