Behind terrific performances from Josh Stein and Gina Valgoi, Loyola's men's and women's cross country teams finished second and third, respectively, at the Horizon League Championship held this morning in Cleveland, Ohio. The men's team finished with 62 points while the women's team had a team score of 75, 17 points behind second-place Youngstown State. Butler won both titles, including the men's title for the 14th consecutive season.

I feel the teams performed very well in the adverse conditions," said head coach Randy Hasenbank. "The course was very muddy, 6-8 inches deep in many places, true cross country."

After finishing seventh in this meet each of the last two seasons, Stein took fifth in this year's meet, posting a time of 26:20 over the 8K course. Freshman Sam Penzenstadler continued his terrific rookie season, putting together one of his best races of the season to finish eighth - second among freshmen - with a finishing time of 26:47. Senior Danny Docherty was not far behind Penzenstadler, taking 12th in 26:54, fractions of a second behind Wright State's Jason Bruns.

Sophomores Andy Fenske and Alex Thornburg rounded out the scoring for the Ramblers, running well together and finishing 18th and 19th in 27:20 and 27:23, respectively.

On the women's side, it was a two-woman race the whole way as Valgoi had to settle for second place, with her time of 18:45 just five seconds slower than champion Shelbi Burnett of Butler and 21 seconds ahead of the third-place finisher. Megan Janezic capped off her breakout season with another terrific run, finishing eighth overall in 19:37.

Sophomore Alyvia Clark was the next Rambler to cross the finish line, taking 15th in 20:00, while Liz Butler (24th, 20:39) and Catherine Crisler (30th, 20:54) rounded out Loyola's scoring quintet.
