CHICAGO - Monica Albano led three Ramblers in double figures with 14 points but visiting Detroit used a 7-0 run midway through the second half to take the lead and the Titans did not look back, knocking off the Ramblers, 71-62, this afternoon in the final Loyola basketball game played at old Alumni Gym. Loyola drops to 11-16 (5-11 Horizon) while the Titans improve to 12-15 (6-10).
"It was a great atmosphere in the old gym today," said head coach Eric Simpson. "There were a number of former women's basketball players in attendance, which was great to see. I just wish we could have closed down the building with a win."
Loyola started out hot, scoring the first six points of the game on threes from Lindsey Sebetic and Albano. The Ramblers played in front for nearly the entire half and opened a 22-17 lead on an Abby Skube trey. After Detroit rallied to pull even at 26, Albano buried another trifecta to give LU the lead but Cherridy Thornton beat the buzzer with a three-pointer to send the teams to the locker room tied at 29 apiece. Albano led all scorers with 11 points in the period and the Ramblers shot 52% from the floor to offset Detroit's 11-2 edge in second chance points.
The second half was more of the same and Loyola moved out to a 37-35 lead on a three-point play by Katie Kortekamp. The game was tied at 41 after Lisa Samplawski hit two of three free throws but Detroit was able to string some baskets together and took a 48-41 lead on a Jalesa Jones basket. Skube answered with a three-pointer and the Ramblers got as close as three (53-48) but Thornton knocked down two more threes to up the lead to nine and LU could get no closer than six the rest of the way.
Albano led the way with 14 points and added eight rebounds. Samplawski scored 11 of her 13 points in the second half while senior Brittany Boeke finished with 10 points and three blocked shots before fouling out.
Loyola wraps up the regular season next week with a pair of road games starting Thursday night at Cleveland State.
