Second Half Goals Lead Golden Eagles By Ramblers

Sept. 21, 2013

Final Stats

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - A barrage of second half goals proved to be the downfall of the Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team as they fell to Marquette tonight, 3-0. All three of the Golden Eagle goals were scored inside a 32-minute span in the second half.

"We battled hard tonight against a very good Marquette side," said Loyola head men's soccer coach Neil Jones. "For periods in the first half, we kept the ball well and created a few opportunities that on a different day may have gone in. Full credit must be given to Marquette though. They took their goals well and were a tough team to break down defensively."

Marquette came out on the offensive in the first half, tallying three corner kicks before the game had reached the five-minute mark. Loyola's defense would stand tall in support of sophomore goalkeeper Tim Dobrowolski though to keep the game scoreless in the early going. Dobrowolski would be called upon to make one of his three saves of the first half in the 20th minute when he denied Axel Sjoberg's headed attempt.

Loyola's only attempt on goal in the first half came in the dying minutes play. Recently substituted junior Andrew Raymonds header was turned away by the Marquette goalkeeper, Charlie Lyon. The Ramblers were outshot, 7-3, in the opening 45 minutes of play but found themselves in a nil-nil deadlock at the intermission.

The Golden Eagles wasted little time in finding the back of the net at the restart when Louis Bennett II fired a one-timer inside Dobrowolski's left post to give his side a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute of play. Preseason All-BIG EAST selection C. Nortley doubled that lead in 65th minute, putting his attempt into the back of the net following a blocked shot.

Down 2-0 and with less than half an hour to play, Loyola began its quest for a goal that would draw them back within one. An opportunity fell to the feet of senior Max Van Houten but Lyon, a 2013 "Preseason Best XI" Second Team selection by TopDrawerSoccer.com, was up to the task in goal and preserved the shutout. Adam Lysak would go on to add a third for Marquette in the 84rd minute, sealing a 3-0 win for the home side.

The Ramblers will now regroup as they prepare for a meeting with the Dayton Flyers next Saturday night. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m., Central Time, at Baujan Field in Dayton.
