CHICAGO, Ill. - Ruvanna Campbell picked up her tenth double-double of the season as UIC used a sizeable run in the first half to create separation en route to 63-28 victory over Loyola this evening at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Ill. The victory snaps a brief two-game skid for the Flames, who move to 9-3, while the Ramblers slip to 2-9 to close out non-conference play.
Campbell picked up her first two of the night with just under a minute gone before Becca Smith connected from beyond the three-point arc to give Loyola a 3-2 lead with 18:04 to play in the first half. The junior from South Elgin, Ill. added two more on a fast break score to give Loyola what would be its largest lead of the game (5-2) at the 16:19 mark. Another Campbell bucket ignited a 7-0 run for the hosts that put the Flames in front by four (9-5) with 14:10 remaining in the half.
UIC had stretched its advantage to five (13-8) when Sam Lambrigtsen hit on a pair of free throws prior to burying a long three-point shot to tie the game at 13-13 with 10:24 to play. The freshman's score would be Loyola's final field goal of the opening stanza as two Campbell free throws put the Flames back in front and began a 21-1 run that saw UIC race into the locker room with a 34-13 lead.
The Flames held an advantage in nearly every statistical category in the opening 20 minutes, highlighted by a 26-2 edge in points in the paint. UIC finished the half at just over 45% (14-of-31) from the field, while holding Loyola to only four first-half field goals (22%).
Following a three from Melita Emanuel-Carr to open the scoring in the second half, Taylor Manuel's layup with 42 seconds gone put Loyola on the board and also brought an end to an 11:43 span without a field goal for the Ramblers. Manuel, out of St. Louis, Mo., answered another Carr score with a jumper shortly after to cut the Flames' lead back down to 21 (39-18) with 17:30 remaining in regulation.
A fast break layup from Teri Bender pushed the UIC lead over the 30-point plateau (49-18) for the first time on the evening with 13:34 to play. Bailey Farley's mid-range jumper brought the deficit to 28 (52-24) at the 8:38 mark but that proved to be as close as the Ramblers would get for the remainder of the game as UIC coasted to the finish line.
Lambrigtsen finished with nine points to lead the Maroon & Gold, while Manuel and Smith each grabbed five rebounds. Campbell, one of three Flames to finish in double figures in scoring, closed out her night with game-high marks in both points (24) and rebounds (15) for UIC.
With its non-conference schedule now complete, Loyola will turn its attention to the beginning of Missouri Valley Conference play. The Ramblers start their 18-game conference slate on Friday night (Jan. 2) when they play host to the Drake Bulldogs. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. from inside Gentile Arena.
