PALO ALTO - The Loyola University Chicago men's volleyball team swept No. 10 Stanford 3-0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-18) on Saturday night to improve their overall record to 2-0. Cody Caldwell led the Ramblers 10 kills, while Thomas Jaeschke fired nine kills and seven digs.
The Ramblers jumped out to an early 8-4 lead in the first set after kills from Jeff Jendryk, Owen McAndrews and Thomas Jaeschke. The teams traded points back and forth until a 3-0 run pulled the Cardinal to within one point, forcing a Rambler timeout. The Ramblers stormed out of the timeout, going on a 7-2 run to take a 19-14 lead. Stanford scored three unanswered points, but a kill from Jendryk halted the run, giving Loyola a 21-16 lead. The Ramblers were able to close out the set after kills from Jaeschke, Olson and Caldwell, making the score 25-22 and giving the Ramblers a 1-0 lead.
Loyola carried the momentum into the second set, racing out to a 6-1 lead after kills from Caldwell, Jaeschke and McAndrews. The Ramblers continued to pull away, going on a 3-0 run to increase the lead to 15-7. Kills by Caldwell, McAndrews, Olson and Peter Hutz gave Loyola a 21-10 lead, and the Ramblers were able to pull away and close the set, winning 25-13.
The third set began with Stanford jumping out to a 4-1 lead, but a Cardinal service error and back-to-back kills from Caldwell tied the game at 4-4. The teams continued to trade points until back-to-back points from Olson, a kill and an ace, gave the Ramblers a 16-14 lead. Loyola went on a 5-0 run, led by kills from Jaeschke and McAndrews, followed by a service ace from Trevor Novotny, to increase the lead to 23-17. A block by Olson and Caldwell sealed the deal, giving Loyola a 25-18 win in the third set and a 3-0 win overall.
The Ramblers are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 17 when they host Harvard in the first home match of the season. The game will also feature the raising of the 2014 NCAA Championship banner.
