PALO ALTO - The Loyola University Chicago men's volleyball team kicked off the 2015 campaign with a 3-1 (25-17, 25-21, 22-25, 25-23) victory over No. 6 BYU on Friday night. Junior Thomas Jaeschke led the Ramblers with a double-double, recording 18 kills and 15 digs in the victory.
"It was a great win for us on the road against a talented BYU team," said head coach Shane Davis. "We hope to come back tomorrow against Stanford and continually improve as a team."
The Ramblers began the first set by jumping out to a quick 4-1 lead. The Cougars were able to pull within one point, but back-to-back kills from Nicholas Olson and Owen McAndrews put Loyola back on top, 7-4. The two teams traded points as Loyola maintained the lead, with the Cougars cutting the margin to two before kills from Cody Caldwell, McAndrews and Jaeschke increased the Rambler lead to 20-15. The Ramblers ended the set on a 5-2 run to win it 25-17.
Loyola carried the momentum into the second set and raced out to a 10-5 lead, with Olson recording two kills and two blocks during the stretch. The Ramblers maintained a steady lead until a 4-0 run pulled the Cougars to within two points, cutting Loyola's lead to 22-20. The two teams traded a point apiece, a kill from Caldwell, followed by a Loyola attack error, before back-to-back kills from Jaeschke and Caldwell sealed the deal. The Ramblers took the second set 25-21 to increase the overall lead to 2-0.
BYU opened the third set with renewed energy, jumping out to a 10-4 lead. The Ramblers then rallied behind kills from Peter Hutz, Jaeschke and Caldwell, as well as two blocks from freshman Jeff Jendryk, before a Trevor Novotny service ace cut the Cougars' lead to one. The teams battled back and forth until a block from Jaeschke and Jendryk tied the score at 19-19, but a string of attack errors by the Ramblers led to the Cougars winning the set, 25-22.
The fourth set began with the two teams trading points back and forth until a 3-0 run gave the Cougars a 9-6 lead. The Ramblers responded with a run of their own, led by three kills from Jaeschke, as well as one from Caldwell and a service ace from Hutz, to take an 11-10 lead. The teams battled back and forth, tying the game eight times before McAndrews scored back-to-back points, a kill and a block, to give the Ramblers a 21-19 lead. Loyola then scored four more unanswered points, as Caldwell recorded two kills and Jaeschke fired back-to-back aces, to increase the lead to 24-19. The Cougars responded with four straight points of their own, but a kill from Caldwell closed the set at 25-23, giving the Ramblers a 3-1 victory.
The Ramblers are back in action tomorrow night when they take on No. 10 Stanford in a rematch of last year's NCAA Championship final. The match will air live on the Pac-12 Network at 9:00 p.m. CT.
