TUCSON - The Loyola University Chicago softball team continued action at the Hillenbrand Invitational on Saturday, falling to host No. 14 Arizona, 6-2. Despite racking up seven hits, the Ramblers were unable to keep up with the Wildcats, who scored six runs on eight hits. Jessica Balzano led the Ramblers, batting two-for-four and knocking in both of the team's runs.
After a scoreless first inning, Tarran Shaffer hit a leadoff double in the top of the second. Jamie O'Brien reached on an error and Katy LaCivita reached on a fielder's choice, but all three were left stranded as the Ramblers were unable to score. The Wildcats started the bottom of the second in a similar fashion and led off the inning with a hit, but Ashley Rogers was able to retire three of four batters, including one strikeout, to hold Arizona scoreless.
The Wildcats got on the board in the bottom of the third, knocking in three runs on one hit and a Rambler error to take the 3-0 lead. The Ramblers remained scoreless through six innings, despite hits from Shaffer, Jamie O'Brien and Hannah Jenkins, and a three-run home run by the Wildcats in the bottom of the sixth increased Arizona's lead to 6-0. Loyola was able to score in the top of the seventh after Brie Pasquale reached base on balls and Jessica Balzano brought her home with a two-run home run, but the rally fell short as the Ramblers fell to the Wildcats, 6-2.
