CHICAGO, Ill. - The Loyola University Chicago volleyball team's 11-game win streak was snapped on Monday night as Drake defeated the Ramblers 3-1 (25-19, 27-29, 21-25, 16-25) to hand them their first loss since Aug. 29. With the loss, the Ramblers drop to 12-3 on the season and 1-1 in the Missouri Valley Conference.
The Ramblers outhit the Bulldogs .182 to .169, as three Ramblers posted double-digit kills. Morgan Reardon recorded her sixth double-double of the season, tallying 12 kills and 15 digs, while Sami Hansen and Maureen Carls added 12 and 10 kills, respectively. The two seniors committed just two attack errors apiece, as Hansen posted a match-high hitting clip of .476 while Carls hit .444.
"We didn't execute as well as we would have liked tonight," said head coach Chris Muscat. "There are some positives we will take from the match and some areas that we will work to get better at in the gym."
Loyola jumped out to an early 7-3 lead to open set one behind kills from Carls, Brittany Brown, Amanda Cushen and Hansen, forcing Drake to use a timeout. The two teams then traded points until Loyola scored three unanswered, including kills from Brown and Hansen and a Cushen-Hansen block, to up the lead to 18-11 and force the Bulldogs to use their final timeout. Despite kills from Brown, Cushen and Hansen, the Bulldogs rallied to cut the Loyola lead to 23-19 and force the Ramblers to use a timeout, but a Reardon kill and a service ace from Caroline Holt then ended set one, 25-19.
The Ramblers took an early lead to open set two, as a trio of Bulldogs errors, kills from Carls and Brown and a Reardon service ace upped the score to 6-2. After kills from Brown, Hansen and Gabi Maciagowski made the score 9-6, Drake rallied to score seven of the next nine points and go on top, 13-11, forcing the Ramblers to use a timeout. Loyola managed to tie the set at 16-16 behind kills from Carls and Cushen, but a three-point Bulldog run gave Drake the lead once again, forcing Loyola to use its final timeout. After falling behind 22-17, the Ramblers rallied to score five unanswered points behind kills from Reardon and Maciagowski, along with a pair of blocks from Carls, to tie the set at 22-22. The teams then battled back-and-forth, with each reaching set point numerous times, before the Bulldogs scored the final three points of the set to claim it, 29-27.
After trading points to begin set three, Drake scored three straight to take a 13-10 lead and force Loyola to use a timeout. The Ramblers responded by scoring six of the next eight points, including a pair of kills from Reardon and a block by Maciagowski and Hansen, to take a 16-14 lead and cause Drake to call a timeout. The teams then battled back-and-forth, with Reardon, Maciagowski and Brown firing kills for the Ramblers, but Drake went on to score six of the final seven points of the set and win it, 25-21.
Loyola began set four by scoring six of the first nine points, as Carls fired three kills and Cushen added two to give the Ramblers an early lead. Drake then scored four unanswered to take a one point lead, and the teams traded points until a 3-0 Bulldog run made the score 11-9, forcing a Loyola timeout. Despite kills from Cushen and Hansen, Loyola was forced to use its final timeout after Drake upped the score to 15-11. The Ramblers rallied to score three of the next four points, including a kill and a block from Reardon, but the Bulldogs responded by scoring seven straight to increase the lead to 23-14. Drake held to win set four, 25-16, and claim the 3-1 victory.
The Ramblers look to get back on track with a pair of games this weekend, as the team travels to Evansville on Oct. 3 before heading to Southern Illinois on Oct. 4.
