The Loyola University Chicago men's and women's cross country teams put a cap on the regular season portion of their respective schedules this afternoon as they competed at the Bradley Classic in Peoria, Ill.
Loyola's men took 13th overall at the event with a point total of 359, finishing in front of MVC rivals Bradley (14th; 377) and Southern Illinois (22nd; 534). The Rambler women accumulated 434 points to finish 17th. Like the men's team, the women finished ahead of a pair of conference foes in Illinois State (19th; 494) and Southern Illinois (22nd; 573).
Senior Jake Brown returned to action today in the 8K red race after missing the Notre Dame Invitational due to illness. Brown, a native of Macon, Ill., turned in one of his strongest showings of the season as he finished 14th overall with a time of 24:52.1 to lead Loyola's efforts in the race. Redshirt junior Alex Baker wasn't far behind, clocking in at 25:00.3 to take 22nd. Senior Chandler Diffee checked in at 76th with a time of 25:46.0. Freshman Derek Rink (116th; 26:18.1) and junior Peter Schaible (131st; 26:28.3) also scored for the Maroon & Gold.
Redshirt senior Jake Mazanke led the way for the Rambler men in the 8K white race. The St. Charles, Ill. native posted a time of 26:40.7 to finish 12th overall. Also earning spots in the top 50 were junior Kyle Whitney (23rd; 27:03.7), freshman Max O'Meara (41st; 27.23.1) and senior Nicholas Prajka (42nd; 27.23.2).
"Jake Brown came back from an illness and had a strong showing today," Loyola assistant cross country coach Mircea Bogdan said. "It was great to see both him and Alex Baker post strong times. The rest of the pack had a bit of a tougher race than we planned, with many of them also coming back from being sick. In the white race, I thought Jake Mazanke ran very well. We hope that with a few adjustments in the next two weeks that we'll be ready to put together a really great race at the MVC Championships. This team has shown a lot of talent in practice and I know that it will pay off in the end."
Junior Emma Hatch led Loyola's women's team in the 6K red race. Hatch, who has been the Ramblers' top finisher in three consecutive events, came in at 21.42.5 to take home 32nd. Junior Cassie Bloch and Julia Demko checked in with respective times of 22.19.2 and 22.19.7 to finish in 78th and 79th. Freshman Rita Maurais continued her impressive debut campaign by posting a mark of 22:32.6 to finish 103rd. The Hopedale, Mass native has scored in all five meets this season for the Ramblers. Sophomore Erin Falsey (142nd; 23:02.8) rounded out the scoring for Loyola.
Senior Mia Wrey crossed the finish line first in the women's 6K white race to open the afternoon. The Seattle, Wash. product posted a time of 23:15.0 to earn a spot in the top 10 as she claimed ninth place. The pairing of senior Kelly Janokowicz and freshman Erin Laird were just over 30 seconds back of Wrey. Janokowicz claimed 25th at 23:47.8, while Wrey came in with a time of 23:51.1 to finish in 26th.
"We had some nice performances today," Loyola assistant cross country coach Maraya Slatter commented. "It was good to walk away with a few new personal bests but there are still improvements that can be made. We'll continue to push forward as we look towards the MVC and NCAA regional meets."
Loyola will be idle next weekend as it prepares for the 2016 Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Oct. 29. This year's edition of the event will be hosted by Northern Iowa at the Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
