In Short...
Devyn Jambga's goal in the 57th minute proved to be the difference as SIUE dealt the No. 11/6 Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team a 1-0 defeat this evening at Korte Stadium in Edwardsville, Ill. With the win, the Cougars improve their league-best unbeaten run to nine games and move to 8-4-4 (4-1-2 MVC), while the Ramblers fall to 12-2-1 (5-1-1 MVC).
How It Happened
Loyola was the aggressor early on an unseasonably warm late fall evening just outside of St. Louis. Redshirt senior Ryan Howe sent a free kick into the box that nearly found its way inside the upper corner in the fourth minute. The Ramblers would go on to generate a pair of corner kicks shortly after that were both cleared away by the Cougar defense.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Andrew Chekadanov turned in what was arguably the top highlight of the opening half just after the quarter-hour mark. In the 16th minute, the St. Louis, Mo. product came up with a diving save on Greg Solawa's effort from eight yards to keep the game scoreless. Kyle Dal Santo, the SIUE netminder, would match Chekadanov with a diving stop of his own on junior Elliot Collier's try in the 30th minute to ensure that the two teams would head to the locker room knotted up at 0-0.
After seeing redshirt sophomore Grant Stoneman fire wide of goal in the 50th minute, SIUE broke through just six minutes later. Lachlan McLean sent a ball forward that connected with a streaking Jambga. The Cougar forward worked his way into a one-on-one situation with Chekadanov and finished at the far post from 10 yards out to put the hosts in front, 1-0.
Chances were few and far between for both sides in a physical final 30 minutes of regulation that saw five yellow cards awarded. Freshman Aidan Megally was presented with what looked to be a clear look in the 76th minute, only for a Cougar defender to race in to deflect his attempt. Sophomore Connor Stevenson came inches away from heading home a Stoneman cross only three minutes later. Loyola's last chance fell to the feet of Howe in the 89th minute, who saw his last-ditch try roll wide of the near post as SIUE closed out a 1-0 win.
Looking At The Numbers
- SIUE's victory this evening brings an end to Loyola's six-game unbeaten run and marks only the second time this season that the Ramblers have been held scoreless.
- Loyola finished the night with an 11-6 edge in shots and was led in the department by Megally, who registered a team-best three attempts.
- Tonight's contest had a physical tone throughout as the two teams combined for 28 fouls and seven yellow cards.
