In Short...
The No. 14/11 Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team picked up its third win in as many games this evening as it defeated Drake by a final count of 4-0 at Loyola Soccer Park. With the win, the Ramblers improve to 10-1-0 overall (4-0-0 MVC), while the Bulldogs fall to 3-8-0 (0-3-0 MVC).
Coach Jones' Thoughts...
"We're always happy with three points in the Missouri Valley Conference. It was nice to score some goals. I thought Drake really put us under some serious pressure for the last 15 or 20 minutes of the first half. Going into halftime, we had to tell the guys to bring more energy in the second half and clean up a few things defensively. Obviously we scored some goals in the second half but some of those came from better defending and just being cleaner overall."
How It Happened
Loyola wasted little time in jumping in front. Redshirt sophomore Grant Stoneman sent a pass down the right side that was chased down by sophomore Alec Lasinski. The Ann Arbor, Mich. native raced around an onrushing Darrin MacLeod, the Drake goalkeeper, and slotted his attempt from 15 yards out into the back of the net to give Loyola a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute.
To its credit, Drake looked to find its footing as the half wore on and began to pressure the Rambler defense. James Wypych, who entered the night second on the Bulldog roster in goals scored, headed just wide of goal off of a free kick from Ben LeMay in the 30th minute. Freshman Marius Kullmann nearly had the Ramblers racing into halftime with a two-goal edge when his blast from 12 yards was turned away by MacLeod at his near post in 41st minute. Neither team would tally another attempt on target for the remainder of the half as the Maroon & Gold took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Ramblers once again struck early to begin the second stanza. Sophomore Fabian Lifka fed a ball through to junior Elliot Collier in the 53rd minute that the Hamilton, New Zealand product fired past MacLeod to double the Loyola advantage, 2-0. Lasinski nearly netted his second of the evening only seven minutes later when he found himself with a breakaway opportunity, only for MacLeod to do just enough to deny his attempt.
It proved to just be a matter of time until Loyola found its third. In the 71st minute, junior Brody Kraussel sent a cross across the face of goal that connected with sophomore Ryan Walker at the far post. The Cedar Rapids, Iowa native slammed his one-time opportunity home on an open net to up the lead to 3-0. Two minutes later, junior Kyle Thomson put an exclamation point on the Ramblers' big night when he converted from the penalty spot following a Drake foul in the box to cap off a comprehensive 4-0 win.
Looking At The Numbers
- This evening's victory sees Loyola reach the 10-win mark for the second time in as many seasons. It marks the first time that the program has achieved back-to-back double-digit win seasons since 2007-08.
- Four different Ramblers found the back of the net in the victory, with Collier and Lasinski each adding their team-best fifth tallies of the season.
- Kraussel dished out his team-high eighth assist of the year, which puts him just one short of Tom Sheehy (1982) for fifth all-time on Loyola's single-season record board. The Milwaukee, Wis. product leads the Valley in the category and ranks in the top five nationally.
