Grand Canyon Surges to Stun No. 12 Loyola, 3-2

In Short...
Loyola took an early 2-0 lead, but Grand Canyon battled back to win the next three sets and defeat the Ramblers in the final match of the weekend series.

How it Happened
After trading points throughout set one, Loyola scored three unanswered behind an Owen McAndrews service ace, a kill from Collin Mahan and a Jeff Jendryk/Ben Paisted block to take a 21-18 lead. Another three-point run, which included a Ben Plaisted kill, a Dane Leclair service ace and a Jendryk/Peter Hutz block, sealed the deal and the Ramblers went on to take set one, 25-20.

Grand Canyon used a pair of three-point runs to take an early 7-3 lead in set two, but Loyola battle back to tie the set before a Mahan kill gave the Ramblers an 11-10 lead. The teams then traded sideouts until Jeff Jendryk led Loyola on a three-point run, slamming a kill and teaming up with Peter Hutz for a block, to give Loyola the 17-14 lead. The Ramblers held on to the steady lead until the Lopes managed to cut the deficit to one point, but kills from Collin Mahan and Trevor Novotny ended set two, 25-23.

The two team battled back-and-forth in set three until Grand Canyon scored four straight points to take a 19-14 lead. Loyola then scored five of the next six points, with Will Tischler recording two kills and a block with Owen McAndrews, to cut the Grand Canyon lead to 20-19, but the Lopes rallied to close out the set, 25-20.

After swapping sideouts to begin set four, Grand Canyon used multiple strings of back-to-back points to take a 21-18 lead. Back-to-back Jendryk kills then cut the deficit to one point, but the Lopes managed to hang on and win the set, 25-23, and force a deciding frame.

The two teams traded points to open the fifth set until Grand Canyon put together a four-point run to take an 11-7 lead, forcing Loyola to use both timeouts during the stretch. Despite kills from McAndrews, Mahan and Jendryk, the Lopes managed to hang on and win the set, 15-11, to complete the comeback.

Inside the Numbers
- Three Ramblers recorded double-digit kills, led by 17 from Jeff Jendryk. Collin Mahan posted 14, while Trevor Novotny added 15 kills to go along with 10 digs to post a double-double.
- The Ramblers posted a hitting clip of .289 on the contest and are 3-6 on the season when hitting below .300.
- Jendryk and Peter Hutz led the defense and combined for 13 block assists.
- Both teams recorded eight kills in the final set, but the Lopes committed just one error to outhit the Ramblers .636 to .200.

Loyola closes the regular season next weekend with a pair of home contests against IPFW and Ball State.
