CHICAGO (November 4, 2017)
In Short
Host Loyola University Chicago received 11 kills from
Gabi Maciagowski, but it couldn't recover from a heartbreaking first-set defeat and suffered a 26-28, 12-25, 15-25 loss to Illinois State (17-11, 10-5 MVC) this evening at Gentile Arena. The Ramblers saw their two-match winning streak come to an end as they slipped to 3-22 overall and 2-12 in Missouri Valley Conference play.
How It Happened
At the outset, it appeared Loyola was primed to pick up its third straight win as Maciagowski helped the hosts to an 18-12 lead by cracking four of her seven kills in the set, and adding a block during that opening spurt. Illinois State began to chip away at the deficit on Jaelyn Keene's kill and a stop by Sydney Holt capped a 12-6 Redbirds run that evened the score at 24. Loyola went ahead, 26-25, on an ISU error, but then Keene tallied two kills as part of a set-closing 3-0 spurt that gave the Redbirds a come-from-behind, 28-26 victory.
Loyola scored the first two points of the second set, but that lead would be short-lived as Illinois State roared back to seize a 7-6 advantage and proceeded to close out the set on an 18-6 run for a 25-12 win.
The Ramblers grabbed the first point of set three thanks to a Redbird hitting error, but from there, Illinois State strung together four unanswered points to grab hold of a 4-1 lead it would never relinquish. ISU led by as many as 10 points before the Ramblers tried to rally and make things interesting. Three straight points, on a kill from
Morgan Gresham, an ISU error and a Maciagowski -
Haley Hoffman block, closed the gap to 17-10, but Loyola would get no closer than seven the rest of the set en route to a 25-15 setback.
A Look At The Numbers
- In addition to Maciagowski's team-best 11 stops, Loyola received six kills from Quinn Spieker.
- Keene led all players with 13 kills for Illinois State, which .241 on the night.
