In Short
No. 10 Loyola University Chicago hit .376 (46-11-93) as a team and totaled 16.5 blocks en route to a 25-17, 25-18, 22-25, 25-14 victory over No. 13 Penn State (13-9) tonight at Gentile Arena. The win is the Ramblers’ third in a row and moves them to 14-8 overall on the year.
How It Happened
Loyola scored seven straight points, five courtesy of Penn State hitting errors, to turn a one-point deficit into a 10-4 lead in the opening set. The Nittany Lions would get as close as four points the remainder of the way, but the Ramblers were able to keep PSU at arm’s length and rolled to a 25-17 win.
A 6-1 run, fueled by two kills and an ace helped the Ramblers break a 5-all stalemate and sprint out to an 11-6 lead in set two. Penn State cut Loyola’s lead down to 13-11 thanks to a 4-0 run of its own, but a kill from Ben Plaisted and a Nittany Lion error pushed the advantage back to four at 15-11. Loyola would lead by as many as six points the rest of the way until Jeff Jendryk’s ace closed out a 25-18 Rambler victory.
Penn State tallied three consecutive points to snap a 10-10 tie and seize a 13-10 lead it would never relinquish on its way to a 25-22 win in the third set. Loyola struggled offensively, hitting just .071 (8-6-28) as it saw a streak of eight straight set wins come to an end.
Loyola took command of the fourth set thanks to a 6-1 run that turned a 7-7 tie into a 13-8 Rambler advantage. Will Tischler came up big during that stretch, tallying two kills, while teaming with Jendryk on a block, to help Loyola coast to a 25-14 victory. The Ramblers were unbelievably efficient in the fourth set, hitting a whopping .650 (14-1-20) to earn their third straight win.
