In Short…
Junior
Alec Lasinski's goal just over four minutes into overtime capped off a thrilling comeback for the Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team as it defeated Xavier, 2-1, this evening in the season-opener for both teams at the Xavier Soccer Complex in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Coach Jones' Thoughts…
"The Xavier Men's Soccer program is a top class organization, with an excellent on-field product. Tonight was an extremely hard fought game and Xavier will win a lot of games this year based on what we saw tonight. We did what we do which is never give up, and continue to battle, and fortunately tonight we were able to get a positive road win. Now we must continue to improve as we open conference play on Friday vs. Valparaiso."
How It Happened
Following a trio of early misfires, Xavier would net the game's first goal in the 27 minute off of a corner kick. Jacob Goodall sent a ball into the box that fell to Cameron Taylor, who finished an uncontested look to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Junior
Ryan Walker looked to answer just two minutes later but Xavier goalkeeper Zachary Nelson came up with his first stop of the night to send the Musketeers into the locker room with a 1-0 edge.
Loyola came out of the intermission firing as senior
Elliot Collier, junior
Tucker Stephenson and redshirt freshman
Addison Parrish all had shots blocked by the Xavier defense. Following another stop by Nelson on a Collier blast, the duo of senior
Kyle Thomson and junior
Fabian Lifka provided Loyola with an equalizer. Lifka sent a ball into the box that Thomson headed past Nelson to level the score at 1-1 in the 64
th minute.
Redshirt freshman
Lucas Bartlett came close to giving the Ramblers the lead ahead of overtime, heading a Lifka corner wide of goal in the 69
th minute. Freshman goalkeeper
Aidan Aylward made a crucial stop on Samson Sergi's try with time winding down to ensure that overtime would be needed.
The Ramblers wasted little time in tracking down a golden goal in the first extra session. Sophomore
Marius Kullmann sent a low ball into the box that took a fortunate bounce before finding Lasinski. The junior, who led Loyola with a seven goals last season, made the most of his chance as he chipped past a sprawling Nelson to set off a wild celebration and seal a 2-1 win.
