In Short…
Jake Pesek's goal with less than three minutes remaining in regulation proved to be the difference as Valparaiso downed the Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team, 2-1, in tonight's game as part of the DoubleTree by Hilton North Shore Chicago Classic. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 1-1-1 (1-0-0 MVC), while the Ramblers slip to 1-1-0 (0-1-0 MVC).
How It Happened
Both goalkeepers were called into action early on a mild night in Rogers Park. Freshman netminder
Aidan Aylward collected Jordan James' try in the fifth minute, while senior
Elliot Collier was denied by Nacho Miras, the Valparaiso goalkeeper, just over a minute later. Aylward notched another stop in the ninth minute when he turned away Matthew King.
Redshirt junior
Grant Stoneman had a chance to put the Ramblers on top just past the half-hour mark but sent his blast high of goal. The two goalkeepers would shine again in the half's closing minutes. Aylward stopped Michael Marchionna before Miras made an outstretched save to deflect junior
Fabian Lifka's attempt as the two teams headed to the locker room in a 0-0 deadlock.
Valparaiso surged in front through Rafael Mentzingen just a minute into the second half. Mentzingen unleashed a blast from 30 yards that eluded a diving Aylward to put the Crusaders on top, 1-0. Miras protected the lead in the 49
th minute as he came up with a point-blank stop on junior
Tucker Stephenson.
Junior
Ryan Walker entered in the 67
th minute and wasted no time in making his presence felt. Freshman
Tyler Biggs sent a ball across the face of goal that was tipped by Miras before ultimately finding Walker, who smashed his attempt in on an open net to pull the Maroon & Gold level, 1-1, with just over 20 minutes to play. That scoreline would hold until the 88
th minute as Pesek hammered home a low cross from James' in what would prove to be the game-winning tally.
