In Short…
Led by a pair of first-half goals from senior
Elliot Collier, the Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team defeated La Salle this afternoon by a final score of 3-1 to close out the DoubleTree by Hilton North Shore Chicago Classic at Loyola Soccer Park. Today's win sees the Ramblers move to 2-1-0 on the year, while La Salle drops to 0-3-0.
How It Happened
As was the case in Friday's tilt with Valparaiso, freshman goalkeeper
Aidan Aylward was called into action early on. Aylward denied a pair of tries from Kenny Lassiter in the game's opening minutes to keep the game scoreless.
Loyola broke the deadlock in the 13
th minute through the senior duo of Collier and
Kyle Thomson. Thomson sent a corner kick towards the near post that found Collier, who headed past Cameron Keys, the La Salle goalkeeper, from eight yards out to put the Ramblers in front, 1-0. Following another Aylward stop in the 26
th minute, Collier would find himself back in the mix again as he fired a pass from junior
Fabian Lifka into the back of the net to send the Maroon & Gold into the locker room with a 2-0 advantage.
La Salle looked to chip away at the Rambler lead just five minutes into the second half when Brandon Gutekunst headed his attempt into the arms of Aylward. Just under 15 minutes later, Loyola would cash in off of an Explorer turnover. Lifka corralled a loose ball on the edge of the box before curling a shot around an outstretched Keys and in at the far post to open up a 3-0 edge for Loyola.
Only a minute after Lifka's tally, La Salle would pull to within 3-1 from the penalty spot when Matt Robinson cashed in following a Rambler foul inside the 18-yard box. Sophomore
Chase Wright came close to reestablishing a three-goal lead for the hosts in the 71
st minute but had his blast parried away by Keys. Aylward would come up with one final save before the final whistle as Loyola closed out the weekend with a victory in front of its home fans.
