In Short
Playing in its final tournament of the regular season, Loyola University Chicago (1-9) put up a valiant effort in set three, but came up on the short end of a 25-15, 25-15, 25-23 decision to Miami (Ohio) this afternoon at the Stacey Clark Classic hosted by Purdue University. The RedHawks move to 8-5 on the year with the victory.
How It Happened
A
Gabi Maciagowski kill opened up the scoring in set one, but Miami then reeled off 11 of the next 13 points to open up a commanding 11-3 edge. The Ramblers refused to go away quietly, however, and used a pair of service aces from
Delilah Wolf as part of a 5-0 run to close the gap to 14-10. From there however, the RedHawks closed out the set on an 11-5 run to capture a 25-15 victory as Loyola hit just -.100 (6-9-30) in the set.
Miami scored the first four points of the second set, but the Ramblers sliced the deficit in half, getting within 5-3 before the RedHawks salted away the set with a 15-5 run to expand the lead to 20-8. Loyola trailed 24-11 before kills by
Elle Van Grinsven and Maciagowski, sandwiched around consecutive aces from
Maddy Moser, trimmed the gap to 24-15, but a Rambler service error ended the late rally and the set.
Loyola put up a fight in the third set and rattled off three unanswered points on three
Quinn Spieker kills to turn a two-point deficit into a 12-11 lead. Miami would surge back ahead 17-14 but the Ramblers answered right back, using an 8-3 run to claim a 22-20 lead. Loyola couldn't sustain that advantage, however, as Miami recorded four straight points, two of those courtesy of Olivia Rusek, to claim a 24-22 lead. Another kill from Spieker brought the Ramblers within a point, but Stela Kukoc finished things off with a kill to give the RedHawks a 25-23 victory and a three-set sweep.
A Look At The Numbers
