In Short…
Ilias Kosmidis found the back of the net with less than four minutes to play in regulation to send The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) past the Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team, 1-0, this afternoon in the opening game of the NIU Adidas Invitational in DeKalb, Ill. The Vaqueros improve to 1-1-1 with the win, while the Ramblers fall to 2-2-0.
How It Happened
After clearing away a pair of early UTRGV corner kicks, Loyola nearly jumped in front in the sixth minute as senior
Elliot Collier ripped a shot off the crossbar. Collier and junior
Alec Lasinski would go on to force saves out of Andy Rios, the Vaquero goalkeeper, before the 20
th minute. Junior
Fabian Lifka called Rios into action again in the 44
th minute but was unable to best the UTRGV netminder as the two teams closed the opening half in a scoreless stalemate.
Both sides struggled to generate scoring opportunities to begin the second stanza. Junior
Ryan Walker skied his attempt in the 60
th minute as the score held at 0-0. Loyola's defense stepped up with 15 minutes remaining in regulation to block a pair of tries by Sergio Laredo Jr. and Angel Lopez, respectively. Freshman goalkeeper
Aidan Aylward added his first save of the afternoon shortly thereafter when he collected Anders Mathiesen's attempt.
Following another Aylward denial, Kosmidis and Mathiesen combined to put the Vaqueros on top in the 87
th minute. Mathiesen sent a ball towards goal that found its way inside the six-yard box before being redirected home by Kosmidis to give UTRGV a 1-0 lead. Loyola generated a pair of late corner kicks but was unable to put an attempt on target following either as it dropped its second game of the season.
Looking At The Numbers
