NORMAL, Ill. (October 13, 2018)
In Short
Kaylee Martin placed 16 kills and host Illinois State (15-5, 7-1 MVC) hit .319 as a team to collect a 25-20, 25-16, 25-16 victory over Loyola University Chicago (11-9, 3-5 MVC) tonight at Redbird Arena.
Quinn Spieker tallied 11 kills to pace the Ramblers' attack and the junior outside hitter has now recorded double-figure kills in each of the last seven outings.
How It Happened
Illinois State hit ,394 (17-4-33) in the first set to pick up a 25-20 victory to open the proceedings. After a Spieker kill put Loyola ahead, 9-8, the Redbirds countered with three straight scores to seize an 11-9 lead they would never surrender. That advantage grew to as many as five points on a few occasions, but the Ramblers used kills from Spieker and
Heather Kocken, along with an ISU error, to shave the deficit to 21-19 and force a Redbirds timeout. The break seemed to settle Illinois State however, as it closed the opener by tallying four of the final five points for a 25-20 win.
A 3-0 burst early on permitted Illinois State to take control of set two on its way to a 25-16 decision. The Ramblers were able to get within three points (15-12), but the Redbirds answered with three unanswered scores of their own to run the advantage to 18-12 and never looked back.
Spieker dropped in a kill to give Loyola a slim 10-9 edge in set three, but Illinois State dashed any hopes of a Rambler victory by rattling off 10 of the next 11 points to open up a 19-11 lead en route to a 25-16 win.
