Â
In Short
Four players produced double-digit kills to power a balanced Loyola University Chicago (12-9, 4-5 MVC) attack in a 25-17, 25-16, 18-25, 25-14 victory over visiting Indiana State (8-14, 1-9 MVC) tonight at Gentile Arena. The victory snapped the Ramblers' five-match losing skid and sent the Sycamores to their third straight defeat.
Â
How It Happened
Loyola pieced together seven unanswered points to seize control of set one, turning a one-point deficit into a 10-4 lead that would grow to as many as eight points. Coming out of the gate firing on all cylinders, the Ramblers hit a whopping .368 (17-3-38) in the opener to coast to a 25-17 victory.
Â
After falling behind 3-1 in the second set, Loyola righted the ship and rattled off five consecutive tallies, withÂ
Heather Kocken andÂ
Gabi Maciagowski each having a hand in three of those points, as the Ramblers took a 6-3 lead they would never surrender. Indiana State cut the gap to a point (7-6), but back-to-back kills fromÂ
Morgan Greshamignited a 3-0 spurt that padded Loyola's lead. That advantage would balloon to as many as nine points and the Ramblers continued their hot hitting, connecting at a .364 (15-3-33) clip in a 25-16 decision.
Â
Indiana State kept the match alive with a 25-18 win in set three, pulling away late by scoring eight of the final 10 points of the set. A Rhiannon Morozoff kill touched off a run of three straight scores for the Sycamores to give them a 17-14 lead they would not relinquish. Loyola trimmed the deficit to a point (17-16), but ISU countered that spurt with four unanswered points of its own to push its lead to 21-16.
Â
Maciagowski provided an initial spark in Loyola's 25-14, set-four victory, tallying a kill, while teaming up twice with Kocken for blocks, as Loyola raced out to a 4-0 lead. Indiana State would rally and get within two points (12-10) but the Ramblers sealed the outcome with a 10-2 run, highlighted by a pair of kills each from Maciagowski andÂ
Elle Van Grinsven.
