CHICAGO (October 20, 2018)
In Short
Loyola University Chicago (13-9, 5-5 MVC) received nine kills apiece from
Morgan Gresham and
Gabi Maciagowski and totaled 12 team blocks to sweep visiting Evansville (8-16, 2-9 MVC), 25-19, 25-18, 25-17 tonight at Gentile Arena. The win, Loyola's second in a row after a five-match slide, gives it a season-series sweep of the Purple Aces and the Ramblers now boast an eight-match improvement in the win column from last season with at least eight matches left to play.
How It Happened
Maciagowski, Gresham and
Quinn Spieker provided the bulk of the firepower in an 11-5 start that helped push the Ramblers to a 25-19 victory in the match opener. Evansville rallied to get within a pair of points on a couple of occasions, the last coming at 21-19, but a kill from Gresham and then three consecutive blocks capped the win.
A stretch of four unanswered points allowed Loyola to wipe out a two-point deficit and grab a 12-10 lead it would never relinquish on the way to a 25-18 decision in set two. The Ramblers, who hit .360 (13-4-25) in the set, salted away the outcome courtesy of an 8-2 run that turned a one-point lead into a commanding 21-14 edge.
Spieker provided a kill and an ace to spark a set-opening 5-1 run that put Loyola ahead to stay in the third set. After the Purple Aces sliced the Ramblers' lead in half,
Heather Kocken came up big in a 6-0 spurt, tallying a kill, while also teaming up with
Delilah Wolf for a pair of blocks, as Loyola reclaimed control and extended its advantage to 14-6 on the way to a 25-17 victory.
