CHICAGO (October 8, 2018) – The Loyola men's soccer team takes a brief break from conference play and pairs up with Xavier for a Tuesday night midweek tilt. The matchup with the Musketeers on Oct. 9 is scheduled for 6 p.m., and will finish off a home-and-home the two schools have that began last year.
Last Time Out: Loyola and Valparaiso kept each other off the scoreboard in the Ramblers' last outing on Sunday night (Oct. 7). The 0-0 draw went in the books as
Josh Lagudah's fourth shutout of the season and extended a five-match road MVC unbeaten streak for the Maroon and Gold. Despite not finding the back of the next,
Tucker Stephenson led the Ramblers with three shots against the Crusaders to increase his team-lead to 19 on the season. The contest at Valpo was the second consecutive match the Ramblers engaged in that required more than 90 minutes, and the fourth in the last five outings.
A Look at Xavier: The Xavier men's soccer team is riding high after a 1-0 shutout of visiting Villanova on Saturday. The blanking was Colin Hanley's first shutout of the season in just his second appearance in goal. Currently fourth in the Big East, the Musketeers have been led offensively by senior midfielder Simen Hestnes with a conference leading 15 points (5g, 5a), who also has a game-winning tally on his resume this season. Consequently, Xavier is at the top of many team offensive categories in the Big East, such as points (55), goals (18), goals per game (1.64) and assists (19).
Series Stuff: Loyola is on a four-match winning streak against Xavier, and hold the all-time series edge at 5-2-3. The series has been filled with overtime contests, currently at six total with the Ramblers' record reading 2-1-3 in matchups with Xavier going more than the guaranteed 90 minutes. The last two times out, Loyola has emerged victorious in overtime, with
Alec Lasinski's golden goal claiming the storylines in last year's matchup in Cincinnati. Tuesday will be the first time since 2005 that the two programs have faced each other in Rogers Park.
Up Next: Loyola gets back to conference play with back-to-back home matchups against Missouri State (Oct. 13) and Evansville (Oct. 20). The two Saturday night tilts are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. respectively, and the game against the Bears is the back-end of a doubleheader with the Loyola women's soccer team.
