ROSEMONT, Ill. (February 11, 2018)
In Short
Junior
Kiley Jones pitched a three-hit shutout, striking out eight, and
Jamie O'Brien drove in a pair of runs to lead Loyola University Chicago (3-2) to a 4-0 victory over IUPUI this afternoon at the Total Control Sports Invitational. The win is the Ramblers' second straight and improves Jones to 3-0 on the season. The righthander has allowed just one earned run in 20 innings of work this season.
How It Happened
O'Brien put Loyola ahead in the bottom of the second inning when she smacked a clutch, two-out double to left center that scored
Jordyn Cordell, who had reached on a one-out walk. That was all of the support Jones would need as she continued her early season mastery by dominating the Jaguars lineup, striking out four in the first two innings alone.
The Ramblers added to their lead in the fourth inning when Cordell ignited a rally with a lead-off single.
Brooke Wilson followed with a bunt hit and Cordell scooted to third on a throwing error, giving Loyola runners at the corners with no outs. O'Brien's then delivered a sacrifice fly to left that plated Cordell, and later in the inning Wilson scampered home on a wild pitch as the Ramblers pushed the lead to 3-0.
Loyola tacked on one more run for good measure in the sixth when
Alyssa Sclafani led off with a pinch-hit, ground-rule double, and after Cordell poked a single through the left side of the infield, Wilson's sac fly brought home pinch runner
Kristin Lea, to make it 4-0.
A Look At The Numbers
- Jones was dominant, striking out a season-high eight batters, walking just one.
- Cordell continued her torrid ways at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored, while O'Brien drove in two.
