In Short
Ryan Jamison and
Collin Mahan notched 10 kills each to lead No. 8 Loyola University Chicago (11-3, 4-1 MIVA) as it rolled past McKendree (6-7, 3-2 MIVA), 25-20, 25-15, 25-19, tonight at Gentile Arena. With the victory, the Ramblers extended their home-court winning streak to eight matches.
Â
How It Happened
Loyola hit .357 (15-5-28) in the opening set and scored four unanswered points to break a stalemate and pull away for a 25-20 victory. Kills from Jamison and
Ricky Gevis highlighted a 4-0 spurt that gave the Ramblers a 9-5 lead and they never looked back on their way to the win. The Bearcats eventually closed within 14-12, but kills from
Paul Narup and Gevis bookended a 3-0 surge that pushed Loyola's lead back to five.
Â
McKendree hit a meager -.053 (6-7-19) in set two and Loyola raced out to a 9-3 lead and never was threatened the remainder of the set on its way to a 25-15 victory. Six Bearcat errors helped fuel the Ramblers' set-opening 10-3 run that was capped by a service ace from Gevis. That initial surge provided Loyola with a comfortable cushion and the Ramblers would lead by as many as 11 points.
Â
Loyola jumped all over McKendree at the outset of the third set, grabbing a 6-1 edge thanks to three kills from Gevis in that stretch. After the Bearcats cut the deficit to three, the Ramblers strung together five straight tallies, punctuated with a Jamison service ace, for a commanding 13-5 lead. From there, Loyola never McKendree back within five points as it closed out the match with a 25-19 decision for its fourth three-set sweep of an opponent this season.
