In Short
Seven players recorded hits for Loyola University Chicago (4-4), but a four-run fifth inning ultimately proved costly as the Ramblers came up on the short end of a 6-2 decision to Binghamton Saturday at the Cardinal Classic.
Â
How It Happened
Binghamton got on the board first, scoring a single run in the bottom of the first inning on Kate Richard's sacrifice fly. Loyola couldn't capitalize on a golden scoring opportunity in the top of the second however, stranding the bases loaded against Bearcats starter Chelsea Howard.
Jamie O'Brien and
Emily Borg poked back-to-back one-out singles and an out later,
Ashley Parenti reached on a walk, but Howard wiggled out of trouble, getting
Shannon McGee to line out to short to end the threat.
Â
The Bearcats would add an insurance run in the fourth, then used a four-run fifth to put the game away.
Â
Loyola cut the lead to 6-2 in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs on three hits, while Binghamton aided the Ramblers' cause with a pair of errors.
Caitlin Engelking, who reached on a pinch-hit single to lead off the frame, later scored on a throwing error and
Peyton DeChant stroked a RBI single later in the inning as Loyola tried to put together a big rally. The Bearcats were able to keep Loyola's damage to a minimum and then set down the Ramblers in order in the seventh to earn the win.
Â
