MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. (March 4, 2018)
In Short
Emily Borg belted a three-run home run and Loyola University Chicago (7-7) recorded 10 hits off four pitchers as the Ramblers toppled Villanova (3-7), 6-2, at the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational Sunday afternoon.
How It Happened
Loyola found itself in an early hole as Villanova scored a run in the bottom of the first inning, but the Ramblers grabbed the lead in the top of the second.
Shannon McGee got the scoring started, driving in
Jordyn Cordell with an infield single and
Katie Polaski followed with a base hit to left field to score
Jamie O'Brien for a 2-1 Loyola lead.
The game remained a one-run contest until the bottom of the fifth when the Wildcats drew even on Lauren Hanna's run-scoring infield single, but Jones avoided further damage, stranding runners at the corners.
Loyola regained the lead in the top of the sixth on
Ashley Parenti's safety squeeze that plated Cordell, who had led off the frame with a base hit. Borg's three-run home run in the top of the seventh provided some much-needed breathing room for Jones, who allowed a seventh-inning single, but kept the Wildcats off the board to earn the win.
A Look At The Numbers
- Jones scattered eight hits and minimized the damage, allowing only one earned run while fanning four Wildcats
- Three Ramblers recorded two-hit games – Katie Kasubke, Cordell and O'Brien.
- Cordell scored three times, while also drawing a walk to go with her two hits.
Up Next
Loyola continues its spring trip to Florida on Wednesday when it takes on Northern Kentucky and South Dakota State in Clearwater.
