CHICAGO (April 22, 2018)

In Short
Kiley Jones allowed only one earned run and struck out seven but Loyola University Chicago (21-20, 7-10 MVC) was unable to generate much offense in a 2-0 loss to Missouri State (29-16, 14-5 MVC) this afternoon at Loyola Softball Park. With the win, the Bears take the three-game series, 2-games-to-1.

How It Happened
Today's game was a rematch of yesterday's series opener with Jones squaring off against Missouri State's Holly Kelley in battle of two of the top pitchers in The Valley. The Bears took the lead in the third inning, plating the game-winning run on a Loyola throwing error that allowed Erika Velasquez Zimmer to score from second base with two outs.

Missouri State tacked on an insurance run in the fourth when Madison Hunsaker, who went 3-for-3 on the day, singled to bring in pinch runner Carsten Warner for a 2-0 lead.

Loyola wasn't without scoring chances against Kelley, however. The Ramblers stranded a runner at third in the bottom of the third inning when Shannon McGee smashed a two-out triple off the fence in dead center, but Kelley escaped unscathed. Loyola would send the tying run to the plate in the fourth inning but come up empty and had its best rally come in the fifth.

Caitlin Engelking coaxed a one-out walk in the fifth inning and one batter later McGee singled to bring the go-head run to the plate. However, Kelley yet again worked her way out of the tough spot, getting Sophia Swain to foul out to end the threat.

Loyola brought the tying run to the plate in both the sixth and seventh innings, but couldn't push across a run against Kelley, who finished the game with seven strikeouts.

A Look At The Numbers
  • McGee tallied two of Loyola's three hits on the day against Kelley, while Katie Kasubke was responsible for the other knock.
  • Jones scattered eight hits and allowed just one walk for Loyola. Her seven strikeouts are her most since fanning eight against IUPUI on February 11.
