ST. CHARLES, Mo. (April 5, 2018)
Â
In Short
Nick Stevenson totaled 20 kills to power upstart Lindenwood (9-14, 3-10 MIVA) to a 25-20, 19-25, 29-27, 25-20 victory over No. 8 Loyola University Chicago (20-6, 10-3 MIVA) tonight at Hyland Arena. The loss is just the Ramblers' second ever to the Lions, and puts a dent in their Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association title hopes.Â
Â
How It Happened
Loyola built an early four-point advantage, taking a 10-6 lead on aÂ
Paul Narup block, and the Ramblers later seemed in control of the first set with a 17-14 edge. Lindenwood stormed back however, closing the set on an 11-3 run, to earn a 25-20 victory.
Â
The Ramblers turned the tables in the second set, erasing a three-point deficit of their own to collect a 25-19 decision that evened the match at a set apiece. Six unanswered points allowed Loyola to gain control of the match and that run, which included a kill and a pair of blocks from St. Louis area native Narup, turned a three-point deficit into an 11-8 lead it never relinquished.Â
Â
Loyola mounted another comeback in set three to put itself in a position to grab a lead in the match, but couldn't close things out in a 29-27 defeat. Trailing 16-12, back-to-back Lions hitting errors ignited a 5-1 Rambler spurt that evened the set at 17 and the teams went back and forth before Lindenwood registered the final two points of the set to claim a 2-1 lead in the match.
Â
Lindenwood led from start to finish in the fourth set, and used a 3-0 surge to turn a three-point lead into a 16-10 advantage. Loyola made things interesting, mounting a late rally to get within 19-17 on a kill fromÂ
Jeff Jendryk, but that was close as the Ramblers would get the remainder of the way.
Â
A Look At The Numbers
- Collin Mahan drilled a team-best 14 kills and Jendryk added 10 to lead Loyola's attack, which hit just .205 on the night.
- Narup contributed seven kills and seven blocks, while Garrett Zolg fell a dig shy of a double-double, with 46 assists and nine digs.
- Lindenwood hit .290 as a team.Â
