CHICAGO (September 17, 2018) – The Loyola Chicago men's soccer team plays its part in the "Red Line Rivalry' on Tuesday at 3 p.m. against DePaul. This year's regular season match will take place 11 red line stops south of Loyola, the first time the two teams have dueled on the Blue Demon's turf since Loyola's 2-0 win in 2016.
Last Time Out: The Maroon and Gold secured a hard-earned victory on Sept. 15 at SIUE to the tune of 2-0. Goalkeeper
Josh Lagudah stole the show by recording eight saves for his second straight shutout. The Ramblers also posted two goals within the first six minutes of the match, the first coming from
Aidan Megally on a penalty kick, followed by
Fabian Lifka sending a shot home off a loose ball in the box.
A Look at DePaul: DePaul, picked to finish 10
th in the Big East, rang up a 2-1 double-overtime win vs. Providence in its conference opener. The Blue Demons enter Tuesday 4-3-0 overall, including a 1-0 win vs. Western Michigan back on Aug. 27. The offensive production has been led by sophomore Istvan Wilhelms, who notched the golden goal in the victory over the Friars for his second of the match. The 2017 Big East All-Freshman Team selectee is tied for second in the conference in goals (3), and has placed seven of his 10 shot attempts on net in the five matches he's appeared in. The Blue Demons are under new leadership this year, as first-year head coach Mark Plotkin returns to his alma mater, where he was also an assistant coach in 2012-13.
Series Stuff: Loyola and DePaul know each other very well, as evidenced by a series history with the two foes playing once every year dating back to the Loyola men's soccer program's inception in 1981. The 2018 battle will be the 36
th match and sees the Ramblers check in with a 17-14-4 all-time advantage. Loyola has not been beaten since 2013, and are 2-1-2 in head coach
Neil Jones' six-year tenure. The longest winning streak between either team is six, owned by Loyola from 1988-93, consequently factoring into the longest unbeaten streak stretching through that same period – a 12-match streak held by Loyola from 1982-93.
Up Next: The Ramblers begin conference play on Sept. 22 at Loyola Soccer Park against Drake. Thanks to a 0-0 draw last season, 2016 was the last time a ball found the back of the net in a Loyola-Drake match – a tilt the Ramblers won convincingly, 4-0.
