CHICAGO (November 14, 2019) – Eight members of the Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team have been recognized on the All-Missouri Valley Conference teams, the Valley announced tonight. Senior
Aidan Megally (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South ) and freshman
Andrew Mitchell (The Woodlands, Texas/Woodlands) earned specialty awards to highlight the group of honorees.
Megally was named MVC Player of the Year, earning All-MVC First Team for the first time in his career. Megally leads Loyola and ranks second in the Valley with nine goals and 21 points. He also sits second in the league in shots with 63, having beat the Loyola record for shots in a season earlier this year. Megally entered this season with 10 career goals and previously earned honorable mention All-MVC honors in 2017 and 2018. The senior is the second Rambler to win the MVC Player of the Year award, joining Eric Schoendorf, who claimed the honor in 2015.
Mitchell earned MVC Freshman of the Year, after leading the Ramblers backline and starting in all 17 matches this season. Mitchell played every single minute in all 17 matches, and netted his first collegiate goal in Loyola's first match of the season against Vermont. Mitchell is the second player to be named MVC Freshman of the Year, joining Kyle Thomson, who claimed the award in 2014.
Joining Megally as a First Team All-MVC Selection is junior
Justin Sukow (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan/South Carolina). Sukow has been an offensive force in his first season with the Ramblers, scoring eight goals, recording three assists and tallying 34 shots to rank second on the team. The San Antonio, Texas native has also notched two game-winners, and recently scored two goals against Valparaiso to lead the Ramblers to victory.
Second Team All-MVC honorees include senior
Marius Kullmann (Fulda, Germany/Marianum Fulda), junior
Tyler Biggs (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Northview), sophomore
Billy Hency (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit) and junior
Giann Magno (Buxton, England/St. Thomas More).
Kullmann has enjoyed a great senior season, serving as a key fixture on the Ramblers defense. The Fulda, Germany native started in all 17 matches, registered three assists and helped Loyola post seven shutouts on the season.
Biggs has been a mainstay in the defensive midfield for Loyola throughout the year, recording five shots in 17 starts this season. He played all 90 plus minutes in 15 matches, assisting the Ramblers defense to seven shutouts on the season.
Hency had a breakout season as a sophomore as he started in all 17 matches and led the Ramblers with four assists, while ranking third on the team with four goals. The Fenton, Mo native recorded two game-winners in victories over in-city foes DePaul and UIC.
Magno is earning Second Team All-MVC for a second time after previously receiving the honor in 2018. The Buxton, England native started all 17 matches during the regular season and played 90 plus minutes in 15 matches. He recorded five shots and assisted in seven shutouts on the Rambler backline.
Earning All-MVC honorable mention for the Ramblers is goalkeeper
Marcel Kampman (Wellington, New Zealand/Scots College). Kampman dished out 35 saves this season and produced a .89 GAA. The graduate student also recorded seven shutouts, which is tied for first in the MVC this season.
The Maroon & Gold face Bradley tomorrow at 4 p.m. for the MVC semifinals. With a win over Bradley, Loyola has the opportunity to advance to the MVC Championship game on Sunday to play the winner of the Missouri State/Drake match.
