In Short
Two early Missouri State goals set the tone for the Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team (9-4-3, 4-2-3 MVC) as they fell to the Bears (15-0-0, 9-0-0 MVC), 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Allison South Stadium. The Ramblers prevented a shut-out as
Justin Sukow notched a goal with 22 seconds left.
Coach Neil Jones Thoughts
"Missouri State is one of the top teams in the nation for a good reason, and if you give them an inch they will take a mile," Jones said. "Obviously we had the worst possible start to the game, but we battled all second half and unfortunately left it too late."
How It Happened
Within the first 14 seconds, the Bears launched the ball down the field and Stuart Wilkin put a shot on target. Goalkeeper
Marcel Kampman immediately snagged the save but Matthew Bentley was right inside the box to get the deflection from Kampman's hands and score.
The Ramblers first chance for the equalizer didn't come until the 18th minute, when
Billy Hency put a shot on goal that was saved by Missouri State goalkeeper Michael Creek.
Alex Moskal also came extremely close in the 31st minute when
Fabian Becerra passed across to Moskal inside the box, who shot the ball just right of the goal.
Missouri State would close the gap even more as the first half winded down, scoring again in the 40th minute. Jack Denton shot the ball across into a sea of maroon and white. Dawson Lee was able to get a touch on it to direct it past Kampman and into the goal.
Hency, Sukow and Becerra each had shot opportunities in the second half, but weren't able to execute. Hency had a great look in the 69th minute but the ball narrowly missed, hitting the crossbar.
Loyola battled to the end, quite literally, as Sukow scored with 22 seconds remaining in the match. It was a triple header as Moskal headed to Hency, who headed to Sukow to notch the header goal, preventing a shutout.
A Look At The Numbers
- The Ramblers out-shot the Bears, 13-7, and won the corner kick battle, 6-2.
- Kampman tallied one save as Loyola held MSU to just three shots on goal.
- Hency, Sukow and Becerra combined for 12 shots and four shots on goal.
