In Short
Heather Kocken totaled a career-high 17 kills to power Loyola University Chicago (1-1) to a 25-16, 16-25, 25-23, 25-17 victory over North Dakota State (1-1) this morning at Savage Arena in the third match of the Blue & Gold Tournament.
How It Happened
Loyola benefitted from a quick start in the opening set, scoring five of the first six points to open up an early four-point advantage.
Addie Barnes continued her strong play and accounted for four straight points (2 kills, 2 aces) after North Dakota State had closed within two, as the Ramblers' lead swelled to 10-4. The Bison chipped away at the deficit and worked their way within two points again, at 13-11, but four unanswered tallies extended the Ramblers' lead to 17-11 and they never looked back on their way to a 25-16 victory, hitting.360 in the set, while also serving up five aces.
A 7-0 spurt allowed North Dakota State to snap an 8-8 stalemate and stake claim to a 15-8 advantage midway through set two and Loyola was unable to recover from that onslaught, falling 25-16 to even the match at one set each.
Loyola turned in a comeback for the ages in the third set, closing out the set with a 9-3 run to rally from a 20-16 deficit and earn a 25-23 victory.
Taylor Venuto sparked the Ramblers' rally, tallying a kill to ignite a string of six unanswered points that she capped with another kill to put Loyola ahead to stay, at 22-20.
Kocken keyed a Loyola run that gave it control of the fourth set, slamming her first kill of the set to snap a 3-3 tie and touch off a 5-1 run that gave the Ramblers an 8-4 edge. North Dakota State closed within three points on a pair of occasions, the last coming at 9-6, but
Quinn Spieker accounted for a pair of kills in a 3-0 burst that ran the lead to 12-6. From there, Loyola never looked back en route to a 25-17 victory.
