Loyola University Chicago (4-5) put together one of its best offensive efforts of the young season, hitting .322 (41-13-87) this morning to earn a 25-16, 27-25, 25-17 victory over UC Irvine (1-6) this morning at the Amy Svoboda Memorial Classic. A balanced offensive attack keyed the Ramblers' victory as five players totaled six or more kills.
How It Happened
Four straight points were part of an 8-2 run early in the first set that allowed Loyola to take control, with
Taylor Venuto and
Addie Barnes delivering a pair of kills each during that stretch. The Ramblers, who hit a staggering .414 (14-2-29) in the set, would eventually work their lead to as many as 10 points on their way to a 25-16 victory.
Loyola charged out of the gate to a 7-2 lead and saw that advantage grow to a as many as six points, the last coming at 21-15 on an
Elle Van Grinsven kill. However, the Anteaters stormed back, going on a 7-1 run to mount a huge comeback and even the score at 22-22. The teams then traded points until another Van Grinsven kill and an ace from
Quinn Spieker put the wraps on a 27-25 Loyola win.
In set three, the Ramblers held an early two-point lead, but put together a 12-5 run to break open a 20-11 advantage as they coasted to a 25-17 victory to earn their second sweep of the season.
A Look At The Numbers
- Venuto recorded a team-high nine kills and added six blocks and Van Grinsven pitched in eight kills to spearhead Loyola's attack.
- Heather Kocken and Sarah Murczek chipped in seven kills apiece.
- Makayla Wolfe led the Anteaters with 10 kills.
