In Short
The Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team fell to Missouri State, 2-1 in a rainy Sunday afternoon match after the Bears notched a quick goal in overtime. The Ramblers move to 4-3-0 overall, 1-1-0 Missouri Valley Conference, while Missouri State advances to 6-0-0, 1-0-0 MVC.
Coach Neil Jones' Thoughts
"It was tough conditions out here with the rain and a pretty stiff breeze," Jones said. "With two good teams going to battle, it was an absolute war. We give full credit to Missouri State, they came out on top today and had a great finish to win the game. We're disappointed about how we could've defended the winning goal better, but we've got to move on and get ready for Bradley on Wednesday."
How It Happened
It was a quiet first half for both teams, as Loyola recorded just one shot from
Jason Ybarra and Missouri State registered two.
Justin Sukow put the Ramblers on the board first, knocking a line-drive free kick into the goal in the 40th minute. Missouri State answered following the start of the second half, as the Bears were presented with a penalty kick opportunity in the 48th minute. Matt Bentley sent it flying just to the left of goalkeeper
Marcel Kampman.
Both teams continued to battle past regulation, entering overtime with a 1-1 draw. With only a minute and a half gone in regulation, Stuart Wilkin dribbled his way towards the goal and shot the ball straight on from about 18 yards out, which proved to be the game-winner for the Bears.
