CHICAGO (February 12, 2020) – After falling to No. 10 Purdue Fort Wayne in Saturday's MIVA opener, the Loyola University Chicago men's volleyball team will hit the road to face Quincy (3-8, 0-0 MIVA) on Thursday Feb. 13 and Lindenwood (7-4, 0-0 MIVA) on Saturday, Feb. 15. The Ramblers (3-8, 0-1 MIVA) will look to snap their three-match losing streak this weekend.
Last Time Out:Â Devin Joslyn crushed a team-high 14 kills, but Loyola dropped a hard-fought, 25-27, 23-25, 26-28 battle with tenth-ranked Purdue Fort Wayne at Gentile Arena in the MIVA opener for both teams last Saturday.
Cole Schlothauer contributed 12 kills, while
Kyle Piekarski added eight kills and three blocks for the Ramblers in the loss. Although the Ramblers have faced three consecutive losses, Schlothauer (141 kills) and Piekarski (.505 hitting percentage), continue to maintain their spots at the top of the MIVA leaderboard. Schlothauer has recorded double-digit kills in 11 of Loyola's 12 matches this season.
Scouting the Hawks:Â Quincy recently picked up their third victory of the season, defeating Culver-Stockton College 3-1 on Tuesday, Feb 11. Senior Omari Wheeler tallied a career-high 26 kills. Wheeler leads the Hawks with 110 kills this season. Sophomore Libero Noam Hannoun leads the MIVA with 2.65 digs per set and 90 digs. Setter Yoran Raymaekers, a graduate student, has tallied 257 assists and is second on the team with 70 digs. Raymaekers is second in the MIVA with 2.33 digs per set and third in digs. Head coach Gavin Mueller is in his third season at the helm for the Hawks, who finished 5-23 (0-14 MIVA) in 2019.
Scouting the Lions:Â Lindenwood is currently riding a four-game win streak and will face Purdue Fort Wayne on Thursday before hosting Loyola on Saturday. The Lions recorded 19 blocks as a team on Feb. 8 against CSUN, tying for the 10th-most blocks in program history. Freshman AJ Lewis was named National Freshman of the Week by Off the block after leading the Lions to a pair of wins over CSUN. Lewis posted 3.67 kills per set while hitting .348. The outside hitter also tallied 2.22 digs per set along with 1.44 blocks per set. On Friday, he led the match with 16 kills on a .519 attack percentage. On Saturday, he followed that performance with a season-best 17 kills and nine blocks in a five-setter against the Matadors. Lewis also picked up MIVA Defensive Player of the Week honors on Feb. 4 and is third in the MIVA with 125 kills. Middle hitter Tyler Mitchem is second in the MIVA behind Loyola's
Kyle Piekarski with a .482 hitting percentage. Head coach Joe Kosciw is in his third season at the helm for the Lions, who finished 9-19 (5-9 MIVA) in 2019.
Series Stuff:Â Loyola has defeated Quincy in 51 of 55 matches across the series history. The Ramblers losses to the Hawks have been in 2000, 2001 and 2011. Loyola also has a series advantage on Lindenwood, having won 21 of 23 matches. The Ramblers fell to the Lions in 2017 and 2018.
