CHICAGO (February 24, 2020) – Evan Muys, who spent the last two seasons as the head coach at Jacksonville University, has been named assistant women's volleyball coach at Loyola University Chicago, head coach
Amanda Berkley announced today. Muys also has experience serving on the staffs at the University of Dayton and Marquette University.
"I am very excited to add Evan Muys to our staff," Berkley said. "It was evident throughout the hiring process that Evan was the right fit for our program. He has high-level coaching and recruiting experience, while being an integral part of three Atlantic 10 championships and three NCAA tournaments. I am excited for Evan to get started working with our team in the gym and be a key piece to our program."
Muys, who graduated from Saint Xavier University in Chicago, served as the women's volleyball and beach volleyball head coach at Jacksonville for the 2018 and 2019 seasons. While at Jacksonville, Muys' team were lauded for their academic excellence both by the NCAA and American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), and on the court, he orchestrated a turnaround as the Dolphins doubled their win total in 2019.
Prior to his first collegiate head coaching position, Muys spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Dayton, where he helped the Flyers to three Atlantic 10 regular season and tournament championships, as well as three NCAA tournament berths and a pair of NCAA tournament victories. During his time at Dayton, he played an integral role in the development of a pair of AVCA All-America honorees and three Atlantic 10 Player of the Year selections.
Muys also spent one season as a volunteer assistant coach at Marquette and played a key role in the Golden Eagles' 2013 Big East Conference regular season and tournament championships. At Marquette, he mentored three All-Americans and the team earned a final national ranking of No. 23 in the AVCA Coaches Poll.
As a student-athlete on the men's volleyball team at Saint Xavier, Muys was a two-time team captain and was also a two-time all-conference pick.
"I would like to thank
Amanda Berkley for this amazing opportunity," Muys said. "It isn't very often that you have an opportunity to work in your hometown and be a part of a highly competitive program and athletics department as a whole. Amanda has been successful everywhere she has been and to be able to work with her every day is something that I am very excited about. From when I first stepped on campus, I could feel the values of the athletics department and I was able to see why it has been successful over the past decade. I saw first-hand the great things that were happening, as well as the support that the University has for its volleyball program, and I knew that this is where I wanted to be."
Loyola, which posted a 21-11 overall record and won a program record 14 Missouri Valley Conference matches, is coming off one of its most successful seasons in over 15 years. The Ramblers return several key pieces from last year's squad including outside hitter
Addie Barnes, who was tabbed 2019 MVC Freshman of the Year and First Team All-MVC, as well as First Team All-MVC middle blocker
Taylor Venuto.
