Loyola Women’s Basketball Adds Transfer Bre Hampton-Bey

Guard averaged 8.8 points, 2.7 assists during three-year stint at UMass

CHICAGO (May 18, 2020) – Bre Hampton-Bey (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy/UMass), a 5-foot-6 guard who spent the past three seasons at UMass, is transferring to Loyola University Chicago, Ramblers head women's basketball coach Kate Achter announced on Monday.

"We are thrilled to welcome Bre into our Rambler family," Achter said.  "Bre is a very dynamic and competitive guard that will help to expand our ability to play with more pace.  She is tough as nails and brings a wealth of experience to our locker room.  Best of all, we are reuniting her with her high school teammate, Jala Johnson.  I look forward to watching them compete together in maroon and gold."

Across three seasons at UMass, Hampton-Bey started in 64 of her 90 appearances, averaging 8.8 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.7 assists.  She burst on the scene as a freshman, scoring in double figures 18 times, including a career-best 31-point effort against VCU, en route to earning a spot on the Atlantic 10 Conference's All-Rookie Team.

After adding 8.3 points and 4.0 rebounds as a sophomore, Hampton-Bey cracked the starting five for the Minutewomen 15 times this past season, scoring a season-high 16 points in a road clash with St. John's.

Prior to her arrival in Amherst, Mass., Hampton-Bey stared at Notre Dame Academy alongside rising sophomore guard Jala Johnson.  A member of the school's 1,000-point club, she enjoyed a standout senior campaign for head coach Travis Galloway's team, averaging 14.1 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists as she was named both the Northwest Ohio Division I Player of the Year and Three Rivers Athletic Conference (TRAC) Player of the Year, in addition to receiving a First Team All-State nod.

Loyola is slated to return 10 letterwinners from last season's team that finished 15-14 overall, the program's first winning season since 2012-13.  Hampton-Bey joins a 2020-21 class that also includes Maya Chandler (Martinsville, Ind./Triton Central), Kaylen Evans (New Lenox, Ill./Nazareth Academy), and Sitori Tanin (Middleton, Wis./Middleton).
