CHICAGO (May 8, 2020) – Drew Valentine, who has served on Loyola University Chicago men's basketball head coach
Porter Moser's staff for the last three seasons, has been named one of the 50 Most Impactful Mid-Major Assistant Coaches by Silver Waves Media. During his tenure in Rogers Park, Valentine has helped the Ramblers to 73 total wins, two postseason appearances, including a run to the NCAA Final Four in 2018, two Missouri Valley Conference regular-season championships and three straight years of 20-plus victories.
Prior to his arrival at Loyola, Valentine spent two seasons on staff at his alma mater, Oakland University, where he served as an assistant under Greg Kampe, playing a key role in the Golden Grizzlies winning 48 contests in two seasons on the staff. Before returning to his alma mater as a coach, Valentine spent two years as a graduate assistant at Michigan State where he helped Tom Izzo's squad to the 2015 Final Four.
In addition to the team's abundant success, Valentine has been instrumental in the development of numerous Ramblers who have garnered major awards the last three seasons.
Clayton Custer (2018) and
Marques Townes (2019) earned back-to-back Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year awards, and
Cameron Krutwig finished runner-up for that honor in 2020. In addition,
Marquise Kennedy was hailed as the league's Sixth Man of the Year in 2020.
During his coaching career, Valentine, the older brother of current Chicago Bulls guard Denzel Valentine, has never been on a team that finished with fewer than 20 wins, with six of those seven squads reaching the postseason.
Loyola, which posted a 21-11 record in 2019-20, finished in second place in the MVC race, just one game out of first. The Ramblers will welcome back all five starters from that club in 2020-21.
