Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Becerra, Hency Lead Offense In Win Over Drake

Becerra registered two goals while Hency added one.

DES MOINES, Iowa (Oct. 23, 2021)

In Short…
Loyola University Chicago men's soccer (8-3-1, 5-1-1) finished this evening with their second win in a row as they traveled to Des Moines, Iowa to take on the Drake University Bulldogs (6-5-0, 3-4-0). This win helps the Ramblers comfortably sit in second in the Missouri Valley Conference rankings as they head into the last three games of the regular season.

Head Coach Neil Jones Thoughts…
"Tonight was a fantastic team performance. I couldn't be prouder of the way the whole group dialed in on both sides of the ball to pick up a great result on the road against a difficult opponent. We now look forward to returning home against Bradley on Wednesday night."

How It Happened…
Both the Ramblers and the Bulldogs came out strong throughout most of the first half as the defenses battled. However, senior Billy Hency found the back of the net for the first goal of the evening in the 44th minute. The Fenton, Mo., native earned this goal off a pass from Oscar Dueso to make the score 1-0 heading into the half.

From there, the Maroon & Gold built off the momentum gained in the first. Fabian Becerra scored the second goal of the match after following up on a reflection from Oscar Dueso, resulting in a 2-0 score in the 62nd minute. The Conroe, Texas, native remained hot during the remainder of the game as he scored the third and final goal off a pass from fellow senior Hency.

The Bulldogs were unable to respond at all on the offensive end, only tallying nine shots on the night compared to Loyola's 24.

Looking At The Numbers…
  • Becerra's two goals gives him four on the season while Hency now has seven, which is still the most in the MVC.
  • Marcel Kampman and the Rambler defense recorded their fifth shutout of the season. The Wellington, New Zealand native made four saves during tonight's match, giving him a .801 goals against average for the season.
  • The 24 shots the team put up tonight is the most Loyola registered against any team this season. The only game remotely close to this number was when the Ramblers played at Evansville on Sept. 18, where they attempted 19 shots.

Up Next…
The Ramblers will have a quick turnaround as they are back in action again on Wednesday, Oct. 27, as they host Bradley University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
