Loyola Drops 2-1 Heartbreaker To No. 11 Missouri State In Double Overtime

Hency nets team-high fifth goal of the season in defeat

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (October 9, 2021)

In Short…
Jesus Barea's 107th-minute goal saw No. 11 Missouri State (9-1-0, 5-0-0 MVC) past the Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team by a final margin of 2-1 in double overtime this evening at Betty & Bobby Allison South Stadium in Springfield, Mo.  Tonight's defeat brings an end to the Maroon & Gold's five-game unbeaten run and drops the Ramblers to 6-3-1 overall (3-1-1 MVC).

How It Happened
After Josh Dolling and Barea both misfired inside the game's first eight minutes, Missouri State struck for the evening's opening goal in the 12th minute of play.  Following a service into the 18-yard box, Jon Koka pounced on a loose ball and directed in from six yards, giving the Bears an early 1-0 edge.

Chances proved to be tough to come by for Loyola during the first half, but graduate student goalkeeper Marcel Kampman notched a pair of saves ahead of halftime, keeping the deficit at 1-0 heading to the intermission.

Loyola came out of the break and quickly forged ahead in search of an equalizer.  Just in front of the hour mark, senior Fabian Becerra unleashed a one-time effort from 18-yards out that forced a stop out of Missouri State goalkeeper Michael Creek.  Kampman answered back with a big save of his own minutes later, parrying away Dolling's blast from the top of the box.

After seeing freshman John Gates denied by Creek in a one-on-one opportunity in the 81st minute, senior Billy Hency provided a moment of magic with just over five minutes to play, unleashing a left-footed effort from the edge of the box that found its way under the bar at the far post to put Loyola back on level terms, 1-1.  Kampman ensured that overtime would be needed to determine a winner, leaping to turn away Koka's bid for a brace in the closing seconds.

Freshman Jakob Bookjans had a chance to send Loyola home with a victory in the 98th minute, but saw his free kick pushed away by a diving Creek.  Barea put away the night's deciding strike just under nine minutes later, directing home off a feed from Simon Pedersen to end it in double overtime.

Looking At The Numbers
- Hency netted his team-high fifth goal of the season during the second half.  The Fenton, Mo. product currently shares the MVC lead in the category with Koka.
- Becerra picked up his first assist of the year on Hency's tally.
- Kampman finished with a career-high six saves on the night, as Missouri State held a slim 14-13 edge in shots.
