First-Half Surge Lifts Loyola To 92-56 Victory Over Chicago State

Ryan Schwieger tosses in a season-high 22 points as Ramblers win 25th straight game at home

CHICAGO (November 16, 2021)

In Short
Ryan Schwieger came off the bench to record a game-high 22 points and Loyola University Chicago (3-0) shot 56.9 percent (33-for-58) to roll to a 92-56 victory over Chicago State (2-1) at Gentile Arena this evening for its 25th consecutive win at home. The Ramblers have now scored 89 or more points in all three of their games this season and are averaging 94.7 points per game.

Coach Valentine's Thoughts
"I thought we did a pretty good job defensively tonight and we were tighter with our ball screen defense. Ryan (Schwieger) and Jacob Hutson were fantastic and I'm excited to see how this team continues to grow."

How It Happened
Loyola seized control from the opening tip and never trailed in the contest, racing out to an 11-2 advantage thanks to four points from Marquise Kennedy and five from Aher Uguak, with an Uguak three-pointer capping that game-opening burst.

Chicago State inched closer, getting within 15-10, but a three from Lucas Williamson started the ball rolling in a game-changing, 22-5 surge that was capped by an Uguak dunk that stretched the lead to 37-15, and from there the Ramblers were never threatened again.

Loyola's defense forced 17 Cougars turnovers in the opening period and the Ramblers connected on 18 of their 32 tries (.563) from the field to take a sizable 46-22 edge into halftime.

The Ramblers removed any doubt about the outcome by scoring the first nine points of the second half as part of a larger 21-6 run that pushed the lead to 67-28. At one point, the Loyola lead reached 42 points (75-33) on a Jacob Hutson layup with 11:28 left to play.

A Look at the Numbers
  • Schwieger provided plenty of firepower off the bench, scoring his 22 points in only 22 minutes of action, while adding three assists, two rebounds, an assist, a block and a steal, hitting 5 of 6 attempts from the field, including knocking down four treys. The Princeton transfer's 22 points are his most since January 4, 2020, when he netted 27 points versus Penn.
  • Hutson put together his best performance of the young season, recording 15 points, while Uguak (14 points) scored in double figures for the third time in as many games in 2021-22.
  • Loyola scored 38 points off 26 Chicago State turnovers and the Ramblers' bench out-scored the Cougars' reserves, 43-16.
  • The Ramblers went 11-for-23 (.478) from three-point range tonight, the second time this year they have connected for 10 or more threes.
  • Brandon Betson led Chicago State with 21 points.
  • Loyola recorded an assist on 22 of its 33 field goals tonight and through three games this year has 76 assists on 104 field goals made.

Up Next
The Ramblers finish up a four-game homestand Saturday (Nov. 20) at 3 p.m. when they host city rival UIC.
