CHICAGO (Dec. 20, 2021) – After receiving two Preseason All-MIVA selections, the Loyola University Chicago men's volleyball team continues to add on to the preseason accolades.
Cole Scholthauer and
Garrett Zolg again received preseason honors, but this time, it comes from Off the Block, a national men's volleyball publication. The website, with votes from coaches and members of the media, selected these two as Off the Block Preseason Second Team All-Americans.
An outside hitter from Mechanicsville, Va., Schlothauer has been a key part of Loyola's offense for the last two seasons. He had a standout year during the 2021 season, accumulating a team-high 267 kills, which was also good enough to rank him 16th in the nation for kills per set with 3.81. He also contributed greatly to the team's defense, finishing the year with 125 digs and 31 blocks. In just two seasons and a total of 37 matches, he is already at 521 total kills for his career.
Giving the ball to Schlothauer is none other than Zolg, a setter out of Huntington Beach, Calif. He is back in Rogers Park for his fourth and final season with the Ramblers as he strives to end his career even better than it started. Last season, Zolg accumulated 794 assists. This was the 10th-best number in the country for assists per set, which ended up being 10.18. Along with that, Zolg put up significant numbers on defense in the back row and front row. Behind the 10-foot line, Zolg led the team in digs with 145 while also adding 22 blocks at the net.
Last season, both Zolg and Schlothauer ended the 2021 season with AVCA Honorable Mention All-American honors.
The Ramblers will be back on the court in Gentile to kick off the 2022 season on New Year's Day. They will welcome the Anteaters of UC Irvine for a non-conference match before traveling to the Rainbow State to take on Hawaii five days later. First serve against the Anteaters on Jan. 1 is scheduled for 3 p.m.
