CHICAGO (February 11, 2021) – Loyola University Chicago senior
Cameron Krutwig (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) is one of 30 players named to the Naismith Trophy Midseason Team for Player of the Year, it was announced today. The 6-foot-9 center is one of only four players from non-Power 6 conferences, and is one of five centers, named to the team.
Â
One of only four players in the storied history of the Missouri Valley Conference to amass 1,500 points, 800 rebounds and 300 assists in his career, Krutwig, a two-time First Team All-MVC selection, is putting up 15.5 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.1 steals and 0.9 blocks per game this season for a Loyola squad, that at 17-3 overall, is off to its best start since 1965-66 (18-2). He is in elite company with that group of Valley players to hit those statistical milestones, joining Oscar Robertson, Larry Bird and Hersey Hawkins.
Â
The big man has scored in double figures on 16 occasions this year, posted a pair of double-doubles, and in a victory over Illinois State on December 28, recorded 22 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.Â
Â
In a decorated career that has included a pair of regular-season MVC championships, a NCAA Final Four appearance, a National Invitation Tournament berth and three 20-win seasons, Krutwig has totaled 1,679 points, 852 rebounds and 337 assists. He is the one of only two Ramblers, joining Alfredrick Hughes (1981-85), to rank in the program's all-time top ten in both scoring and rebounding.
Â
Ranked No. 22 in this week's Associated Press Top 25 Poll and No. 23 in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll, Loyola (17-3, 12-1 MVC) plays two of its biggest regular-season games in years when it travels to Drake (18-1, 9-1 MVC) February 13 and 14.
