CHICAGO (March 10, 2021) – Five student-athletes from the Loyola University Chicago women's basketball team have garnered All-Missouri Valley Conference accolades, it was announced by the league office on Wednesday. Highlighting the Maroon & Gold's group of honorees was
Allison Day (Russellville, Ohio/Eastern), who was named a First Team All-MVC selection.
Just the fifth Rambler in program history to be named a First Team All-Valley honoree, Day has put together a terrific junior campaign, averaging 11.0 points and 6.6 rebounds, both team-best marks, in addition to 1.7 assists. The Russellville, Ohio native has shot a sizzling 54.6 percent (95-for-174), ranking second in the MVC in the category. Day has scored in double figures 13 times this season, none better than a career-high 22-point outburst in Loyola's thrilling overtime road win against UNI on February 20.
Like Day,
Ellie Rice (Austin, Texas/Regents School of Austin) took home the first All-Valley selection of her career, receiving an Honorable Mention nod after putting up 10.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg, and 1.9 apg. The 5-foot-10 hard-nosed guard has been a rock in the Loyola lineup, staring in 82 straight games. Rice turned in the top individual offensive performance by a Rambler this season back on February 6 against Drake, erupting for a career-high 28 points, one of nine occasions that the Austin, Texas product has reached double figures in scoring. She's made her mark on the defensive end as well, spearheading a Loyola defensive unit that ranks third in The Valley in scoring defense (59.2 ppg), as she routinely is tasked with guarding the opposing team's top perimeter player.
The pairing of
Maya Chandler (Martinsville, Ind./Triton Central) and
Sitori Tanin (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) both landed on the MVC All-Freshman Team, marking the fourth straight year that the Maroon & Gold has been represented amongst the group of the league's rookies.
Chandler has started in all 22 games during her debut season in Rogers Park, contributing 8.1 ppg and 2.6 rpg while operating at a 40.1 percent (61-for-152) clip from the field. A 5-foot-7 guard, she opened her collegiate career with back-to-back 14-point outings en route to scoring in double digits eight times. Chandler enters the postseason brimming with confidence after pouring in a season-best 18 points in Loyola's regular season finale with Illinois State this past Saturday.
Tanin wasted no time in announcing her presence, scoring a season-high 16 points in a season-opening win over Chicago State on November 28. In total, she's cracked the 10-point mark on six different occasions during her freshman year as she's chipped in 6.1 ppg and 4.6 rpg. Tanin has also been efficient on the offensive end, converting 50.5 percent (53-for-105) of her field goal attempts. Over the season's closing month, the 6-foot-2 forward has developed into a force on the defensive side of the ball, recording at least one block in eight of Loyola's last 11 games en route to racking up a team-high 24 rejections (1.1 bpg).
Rounding out Loyola's quintet of honorees is
Bre Hampton-Bey (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy/UMass), who was selected to the MVC All-Newcomer Team. The explosive 5-foot-6 guard has added 8.3 ppg and 4.1 rpg in her first year with the Ramblers, starting in eight of her 16 appearances. Hampton-Bey has scored in double figures seven times, highlighted by a 23-point showing in a home win over Southern Illinois on January 30.
Loyola is set to begin play in the MVC Championship on Friday evening. The sixth-seeded Ramblers will take on Illinois State, the tournament's number three seed, in the day's last quarterfinal-round matchup at 8 p.m. inside TaxSlayer Center in Moline, Ill.
