Loyola Drops 4-1 Decision To Saint Louis

Ivey stays hot at the plate, drives in Ramblers’ lone run

ST. LOUIS (March 13, 2021)

In Short
Host Saint Louis (4-7) scored all four of its runs in the first three innings to secure a 4-1 victory over Loyola University Chicago (3-10) this afternoon at the Billiken Spring Tournament.

How It Happened
Loyola found itself having to play catch-up after Saint Louis tagged starting pitcher Sydney Ruggles for a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Three straight hits by the Billikens - a single by Gabbie Kowalik, a RBI double off the bat of Alyssa Chavez and a run-scoring single from Kayla Swiderski - put the hosts ahead early.

Allyson Ivey, who had three hits in today's earlier game against Western Illinois, continued to swing a hot bat at the plate in this contest and her single through the right side with one out plated Teagan Sopczak, who had led off the third inning by reaching on a Billikens error. The Ramblers could have tied the game on Ivey's hit, but Sydney Barnett was thrown out at the plate trying to score.

Unfortunately, the momentum Loyola gained by slicing Saint Louis' lead in half dissipated quickly, with the Billikens extending their edge to 4-1 in the bottom half of the third inning on Kowalik's two-run homer to center field.

Loyola's last gasp effort at staging a comeback in the seventh inning fell short, with Tori Boysen left stranded at second base following her two-out single.

A Look at the Numbers
  • Designated player Sydney Barnett accounted for two of Loyola's six hits in the game, while Ivey added another RBI to her total for the tournament.
  • Ruggles went the distance in the pitching circle for the Ramblers, scattering five hits, while striking out four.
  • Kowalik did most of the damage for Saint Louis, going 2-for-2 with two runs, two RBI and a walk.
