ST. LOUIS (March 14, 2021)
Â
In Short
Loyola University Chicago (4-10) rallied from deficits of three runs and two runs to record 7-6 victory over Western Illinois (8-8) in eight innings today at the Billiken Spring Tournament. The Ramblers have won two of their last three outings.
Â
How It Happened
Western Illinois wasted no time getting on the board, scoring three runs on Savannah Rodriguez's three-run home run over the fence in left field in the first inning. The Leathernecks added to that lead in the second inning on Kellie Marcheschi's one-out RBI single.Â
Â
Loyola dented the scoreboard and cut into the deficit in the bottom of the second when
Allyson Ivey singled home
Abby Brown, who had reached earlier on a one-out walk, and two innings later, the senior first baseman provided another big hit when she mashed a two-run shot to right center to tie the game at 3-3.
Â
The Leathernecks stole the momentum right back, notching runs in the top of the fifth on a passed ball and a Bella Alvarez RBI single, but Loyola refused to go down without a fight, cutting the deficit in half on
Amelia Thomas' RBI single in the sixth inning. The Ramblers would tie the game in the bottom of the seventh on
Jocelyn Currie's run-scoring double that plated
Nova Sinskul, who led off the frame with a double of her own.
Â
Veres worked her way out of a tough spot in the eighth, stranding a Leatherneck on third, and in the bottom half of the inning,
Tori Boysen, who transferred to Loyola from Western Illinois, laced a single to center to score
Madison Ebeling and give her new teammates the come-from-behind victory.
Â
Â
A Look at the Numbers
- Ivey, Thomas and Currie tallied three hits apiece for a Loyola order that pounded out 15 hits.
- Madison Veres was impressive in a relief stint, tossing 4.0 innings of two-hit ball and striking out four to earn the win.
- Tori Boysen also turned in a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4 with a RBI.
